Computer scientist Timnit Gebru says Silicon Valley can’t be trusted to regulate AI technology on its own

The Silicon Valley veteran says big tech can’t be trusted to regulate artificial intelligence by itselfPhoto:As a leading researcher on the ethics of artificial intelligence, Timnit Gebru has long believed that machine-learning algorithms could one day power much of our lives. What she didn’t predict was just how quickly this would happen.

Dr. Gebru, 39, is the founder and executive director of the Distributed Artificial Intelligence Research Institute , a nonprofit she launched in 2021 with backing from the MacArthur Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation, the Ford Foundation and others. Much of her work involves highlighting the ways AI programs can reinforce existing prejudices. “We talk about algorithms, but we don’t talk about who’s constructing the data set or who’s in the data set,” she says.

What does 'regulating AI' even mean? Code review?

No industry should be self regulating. To expect that is to expect failure.

Of course they can’t. But govt regulations slow down R&D, and this is a race we really want a US company to win. China isn’t going to slow down, neither will Russia. And that is the dilemma.

Thank you for including her victimhood credentials in this story. They are highly relevant and interesting

Totally agree!👍

Look at SVB, FTX, Dot com. You still going to trust these nerds in anything?🤣

Which editor saw this picture and thought, “that’s it, exactly what we need for the AI article”

Silicon Valley can't even regulate its own fuckin' banks.

It needs to be federally regulated just like the airlines have an FAA

Yeah, I can't wait until the government tells me how to code.

I mean, silicon valley can't be trusted to regulate general technology so... Yea.

This is why we need ESYudkowsky and his doomsday cult to be the watchmen of Silicon Valley.

Absolutely agree!!!! 🇹🇳

Gov can't be trusted either, ...now what?

Absolutely, there will be an incident and they will keep quiet until too late

Maybe the banks should help?

We already know this ...

Thank you, Captain Obvious.

Truer words have never been spoken

Agreed

Yes, let's have the SJWs of Silicon Valley, like her, regulate it instead.

They barely can manage social medias. God knows the carelessness they will unleash for a buck.

I definitely dont think its prepared to. For all silicon valley has accomplished, this could easily be the most transformative piece of technology to ever come out of there. Not sure their “move fast and break things” mentality is a great call for regulating commercial use.

exactly he hacked into a bank using ChatGPT

AI will turn into the wokest idiot to ever exist because it will be programmed to evolve that way.

Not exactly a bold fact. Does this guy think water is wet too? Silicon Valley of today couldn’t run an honest lemonade stand. Old, old school tech guys were a different, more positive force.

Photo seems to have been taken without consent…near a panda sanctuary…in the winter…waiting to be picked up for the witness relocation program.

She is a 'diversity filler' candidate. Nota 'computer scientist'. Google keeps hiring people like her to look good. Every now and then it backfires.

Yeah he looks like a man you could trust.

Duh

Damn straight, don't trust anyone from California.

And he is absolutely right.

AI often tells inconvenient truths, and that can be a serious threat to ridiculous leftist ideologies.

Who is this creeper?!?!!
