Historic writers’ strike reaches end after deal with Hollywood studios

Union leaders and Hollywood studios have reached a tentative deal agreement to end the historic five-month Screen Writers Guild strike. Once the strike is finalised it’s expected late night shows will be among the first to return to normalcy by early October. The Guild sent out a letter to its 11,000-plus members, saying “we can say with great pride, that this deal is exceptional … with meaningful gains and protections for writers in every sector of the membership”. While the terms of this three-year deal were not immediately made public, the contract is expected to increase pay rates and residual payments for streaming shows. The terms also include protections in regard to artificial intelligence in the content production process. The strike is not officially over until union members hold a final vote, until then members are being encouraged to join the separate actors strike.
