Microsoft appears to be seriously considering small modular nuclear reactors to help supply the power needs for its AI program.

"This senior position is tasked with leading the technical assessment for integrating SMR and microreactors to power the data centers that the Microsoft Cloud and AI reside on. They will maintain a clear and adaptable roadmap for the technology’s integration, diligently select and manage technology partners and solutions, and constantly evaluate the business implications of progress and implementation," adds the job description.

But, like so many things in life, there are potential bottlenecks that could complicate things. The most serious is the need for most SMRs, likeSMR, to use a high-assay, low-enriched uranium metallic fuel. The main supplier of this fuel is Russia, but with recent geopolitical events, the supply of this fuel could prove problematic long-term.

While there are pushes for developing a complimentary domestic fuel production process in the US, until such infrastructure is up and running, Microsoft's ambitions may be handicapped for some time. However, Microsoft's founder, Bill Gates, is known to be an outspoken supporter of nuclear energy and is the founder and chair of the aforementioned TerraPower .

They also have deals in place with another company called Helion, which is working on implementing a working nuclear fusion reactor ASAP. Whatever the future may hold for Microsoft's new "principal program manager," it seems Microsoft is all-in on going nuclear and artificial intelligence.
