As with any revolution in any industry, new laws and regulations need to be made. AI needs to be subjected to its own sequence of validation and it must be able to provide explainable and consistently accurate results.
It’s integral that healthcare-related AI systems are subject to high regulatory scrutiny. We are dealing with people’s health, their lives—and we cannot risk that biases or hallucinations affect the decision-making of a patient with real-life health problems. For this reason, it’s essential to provide a high level of transparency into how these systems are developed, maintained and, most crucially, validated.Building trust is a process. And building trust in AI needs to be done step by step. Despite recent advancements, we can’t expect people to wake up one morning and have full confidence to be diagnosed by an AI-driven system.
As of now, AI-based systems can adequately assist physicians by automating administrative processes, providing valuable insights—such as highlighting a patient’s possible health condition—and many other tasks. However, the physician maintains control over the most important decisions and uses their expertise, training and experience combined with that provided by the AI system to advise the patient in the best possible manner.
