“collaborate”. His choice of terminology may seem incongruous when applied to machines, but, he says, AI uses feedback loops to change what it delivers, which makes the outcome unknown. That’s the difference between a tool and AI, he says. With a tool, you know what it’s going to do.AI-generated image
But that is changing fast, says Ocampo. A new version of Dall-E, an AI-image generator integrated with, can now render words. Ocampo thinks that by the end of this year the issues of hands and faces in the crowd will be mostly fixed, too. Ocampo is excited by the possibilities that these improved AI tools will offer, not just for his work as an artist. He has worked with the CSIRO developing AI technology for environmental management, and is developing a tool to help save teachers time and improve literacy outcomes. He predicts that within three years, AI tools will be creating songs, images, text and videos that are indistinguishable from human-made ones.
