The algorithms and moderation systems of Instagram, Facebook and X allow pro-eating disorder content on their platforms and actively recommend harmful content to children, an advocacy group calling for an overhaul of Australia’s Online Safety Act has proven.Around 1 million Australians experience an eating disorder every year, with a growing amount of research showing a connection between social media use and disordered eating.

On TikTok, no pro-eating disorder content was recommended, suggesting it has placed safeguards on its algorithm. On Instagram, 23 per cent of the content could be classified as pro-eating disorder content, while on X, 67 per cent of the content could be classified as pro-eating disorder.The content included images of people who had self-harmed and images of under-sized models.

An overarching duty of care is needed, according to Farthing, so that the platforms themselves are responsible for keeping each of their systems and elements safe. Reset’s recommended changes would also be platform-neutral, meaning they would apply to whatever platform succeeds TikTok, should it be banned.
