OpenAI could reach a trillion-dollar valuation, per Kai-Fu Lee. However, AI startups face a reckoning, needing profitability.

Making a bold claim at the Fortune Innovation Forum in Hong Kong, Kai-Fu Lee, chairman of Sinovation Ventures and former Google China president, has predicted that OpenAI could soar to a valuation of one trillion dollars soon.

“If you have too many researchers and a culture where everybody can try their ideas, you’ll quickly run out of money as a startup.”, Lee drew parallels to Huawei. The Chinese giant’s focused approach towards 5G enabled it to seize control of the 5G networking market. “That made all the difference,” said Lee, highlighting Huawei’s efficient approach. “We’re taking that same approach to be very, very diligent to save GPU ,” he added about his own AI startup, 0.1AI.

“There is a point of reckoning when investors are going to say: What do you have to show for yourself? What’s your P&L? What’s your growth? When do you break even?”Following the unveiling of its AI-powered video generation technology Sora, OpenAI has been reported to hold meetings with Hollywood giants., Sam Altman and chief operating officer Brad Lightcap met executives from major studios including Paramount, Universal, and Warner Bros Discovery..
