The earlier cancer is detected, the better the chances of recovery, and the less onerous the treatment. This is why screening is so important, whenever possible, although many of the programs put in place are struggling to gain momentum.
The global health authority estimates that more than 35 million new cases could be seen in 2050, an increase of 77% compared to the estimated number of cases in 2022. While prevention remains the key to limiting risk factors – notably smoking, alcohol consumption, sedentary lifestyles, diet and pollution – scientists are also doing their utmost to advance research in terms of treatment and early diagnosis. And artificial intelligence could help improve the latter.
"Computational methods such as this model, through better training on more varied data and rigorous testing in the clinic, will eventually provide AI models that can help doctors with early detection and screening of cancers. This will provide better patient outcomes," says the paper's lead author, Shamith Samarajiwa, quoted in a news release.
