Meta Platforms is holding a two-day event on its Menlo Park campus, starting Wednesday, that is expected to focused on artificial intelligence and the metaverse.
It also seems likely that Meta will announce an update to its Ray-Ban Stories “smart glasses.” There is a four-hour block on the Connect press schedule available for impromptu demos of the new specs. Another bot, the Journal reported, is called “Alvin the Alien,” and is designed to ask users questions about their lives. The Journal noted that a third bot, called Gavin, “made misogynistic remarks, including a lewd reference to a woman’s anatomy, as well as comments that were critical of Zuckerberg and Meta but praised TikTok and Snapchat.”
Post said investors will be focused on whether the company’s VR progress justifies Meta’s “unprecedented” spending on development of the metaverse, which he estimates will be $18.4 billion in 2023, as well as progress on luring developers to the platform. Another focus, he said, will be whether AI innovation could boost engagement or ad targeting on Meta’s social-media platforms. Not least, Post said, investors will be looking for clues about Meta’s plans for spending on the metaverse in 2024.
