The ChatGPT desktop app is now available through Amazon Bedrock in AWS GovCloud (US), according to an AWS blog post. The integration allows organizations with strict security and data residency requirements to access OpenAI’s models while maintaining regional controls and governance.
The deployment includes two components: Work, which handles complex multi-step tasks, and Codex, OpenAI’s coding agent for software development, testing, and review. According to AWS, Codex can be configured to route model requests through Amazon Bedrock Mantle in the us-gov-west-1 region, where access is governed using AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) and existing AWS GovCloud (US) network controls.
The integration supports zero data retention (ZDR), which AWS says processes prompts and responses without writing to durable storage by AWS or sharing with model providers. Organizations pay per token with no seat licenses or per-developer commitments.
AWS provides a walkthrough for a controlled local deployment using API-mode sign-in, managed device policies, named AWS profiles, and network restrictions. The configuration limits access to approved Amazon Bedrock endpoints while disabling other external connections.
AWS notes that using AWS GovCloud (US) and following the configuration guide do not by themselves authorize workloads. Organizations remain responsible for reviewing selected models, services, regions, endpoints, and data flows against their security plans and authorization processes.
The ChatGPT desktop app can be used directly, through the Codex command-line interface, or with IDE integrations including Visual Studio Code, JetBrains, and Xcode. Full details are available in the AWS blog post.
