According to TechCrunch, OpenAI announced on Tuesday that it has acquired Orchestra Bio, a four-year-old AI biotech software startup. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Orchestra Bio, which had reportedly raised around $20 million as of 2025 from investors including Andreessen Horowitz, Atria, and 8VC, creates AI agents that help biotech companies manage drug-discovery operations, TechCrunch reports. These operations include tracking finances and resolving scheduling issues with clinical trials.
According to the report, OpenAI stated it is adding Orchestra’s team and technology to work on Rosalind, its AI model for life sciences research, and the related Rosalind Workbench tool, which aims to help researchers plan experiments and analyze results. OpenAI claims that Rosalind has already secured customers including Moderna and Novo Nordisk.
TechCrunch noted the acquisition reflects how major AI labs like OpenAI and Anthropic are building software for large industries such as pharmaceuticals, while startups worry about potential competition from these labs launching new features.
