Alex Stamos, chief security officer at Cognition and a lecturer at Stanford University’s Cyber Policy Center, warns that artificial intelligence is fundamentally disrupting the cybersecurity industry through accelerated attacks that are overwhelming traditional defenses.
In an interview with The Verge, Stamos described the current state of cybersecurity as approaching a “dark age” while the industry struggles to adapt. According to Stamos, both private actors and state actors including Russia and North Korea are using AI to detect and exploit system vulnerabilities simultaneously, creating what he characterized as a frontier environment reminiscent of the 1990s internet era.
Stamos said the multibillion-dollar cybersecurity industry as it currently exists is being overwhelmed by “unrelenting, AI-boosted waves of hacks, breaches, and attacks.” He indicated this represents only the beginning of how AI will change security practices.
While Stamos does not describe himself as pessimistic about long-term outcomes, he expects a difficult transition period as organizations work to develop new defensive approaches suited to AI-accelerated threats. The interview also touched on AI-powered misinformation and content management on social networks.
Stamos previously served in security leadership roles at major technology companies and has been a prominent voice on internet security and policy issues.
