The New York Times Cooking app launched an AI-powered recipe modification feature in an iOS-only beta on October 23, according to Wired. The tool allows subscribers to adjust recipes by swapping ingredients or adapting them to specific dietary needs.
The feature generated substantial subscriber backlash in comments on the announcement, with users threatening to cancel subscriptions and questioning the need for AI in recipe content. The Times closed commenting after four days and 172 predominantly negative responses.
According to NYT executive communications director Jordan Cohen, the Cooking site and app received 514 million visits in 2025. The company does not publicly share subscriber numbers for the Cooking section specifically.
Wired’s testing found the AI modifier worked effectively, contrary to the reviewer’s initial expectations based on previous failed attempts to integrate technology into kitchen products. The outlet noted that developing reliable recipes typically requires substantial staff resources and testing, making recipe quality central to both the Times Cooking brand and competitors like America’s Test Kitchen.
