Nothing CEO Carl Pei announced on X that the company will ship its first AI device in December. The device will not have a screen, according to Pei, who said it “couldn’t have been an app.”
Pei shared an image showing the Nothing logo above an ambiguous black rounded corner, but provided few other details about the product’s features or functionality. He described it as “a tool, but one built with the personality and care that have come to define a Nothing product.”
The announcement comes just over a year after Pei first announced plans for AI-native devices and an AI operating system.
In his post, Pei referenced earlier AI hardware efforts in the industry, saying “the whole industry is hunting for its iPhone moment: the pendant, the pin, the glasses, the companion, some magical consumer device that makes AI part of everyone’s life.” He added that “looking for the iPhone of AI today is a dead end.”
Nothing would join a growing category of screen-free AI devices that includes the Humane AI Pin, the Friend pendant, and AI-enabled toys. OpenAI is also reportedly developing an AI smart speaker with designer Jony Ive.
